The Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Hon. Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has argued that it will be advisable if the New Patriotic Party (NPP) elects a different individual outside its Akan circles to front the party for the 2024 general elections.
According to Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu, if the change is made, it will help propel the party’s chances of winning the next general elections. And also it will help the party clear the widespread notion of it being an Akan party.
In the past, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has consistently appointed Akan flagbearers and as of now, there’s contention over who succeeds H. E Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
The keen contestants for the position of a flagbearer for the party include Vice President Dr Mahamadu Bawumia and Alan Kyerematen.
But speaking in an interview on Joy News, the Majority Leader of the Parliament said, “Inwardly, I know I have the competence to lead the party but is it wise that after two Akans – former President Kufuor and current President Akufo-Addo – to present a flagbearer candidate with different ethnicity.”
“I think it is not good for a party which has been accused by some as being overly Akanistic in nature. But not everybody would agree with me and that is the beauty of democracy.”
