2014 World Cup winner and former Real Madrid midfielder Mesut Ozil has acknowledged Real Madrid captain and full back, Sergio Ramos as the world’s best defender from his generation.
He made this claim during a question and answer session on Twitter as he asked his fans to ask him any question about the past, present and future of his footballing career as a professional player.
Responding to a fan’s question on whether the Spaniard international will go down as of the best defenders in history?, Mesut Ozil responded praising Ramos’s ambition and will to win.
He argued that the 34-year-old centre back has been world-class for over a decade paying reference to the leader he has become throughout his illustrious career as a professional player.
Sergio Ramos who is said to be edging towards the exit door from Real Madrid after 16 successful years with the La Liga giants has over the course of blistering career won not just the World Cup but has also won the European Championships twice (2008,2012) and been featured in the FIFA World Team of the Year eight times.
Adding up to his incredible individual achievements, Ramos has on five separate occasions been named as La Liga’s best defender.
With 178 caps for the Spanish National Team, Sergio Ramos has won the Champions League four times with the Madrid-based club.
Ozil wrote, “Yes, he’s been world-class for over a decade – and what a leader he has become.”
“His ambition and will to win is amazing. I would say he’s the world’s best defender from my generation,” he added.
